Period 2- Rules

In The Giver, the children are told exactly what to do, when to do it, what to wear, and how to blend into the community. Differences are not celebrated. Think about the pressures that sometimes come at your age with wanting to fit in and having all of the latest trends. Consider the pros and cons of having so many rules. Which rules do you think would be beneficial to our society? Which rules would be difficult to follow or implement? Explain your answer in paragraph form.

  1. Being different can sometimes be a bad thing in my community but can also be a good thing. Some people think that is you are different there is something wrong with that and think of the person differently and treat them differently than if they were similar. I feel that that can be a very mean and wrong thing to do to someone, leave them out because of what they look like or what they know or don't know. There are some rules that are not written down but are not socially acceptable. For example language, certain words are not acceptable. Nothing would happen to you if you said certain words but you may be thought of differently by some people. Most of the time there are rules you follow that are not written but they are just common sense to follow.

  2. There are pros and cons to having so many rules. Some pros would be people wouldn’t get bullied because everything functions the same way and everyone has the same things. Also you know what to expect and also what people expect from you. Some cons would be you can’t express your uniqueness because everything has to be the same you can’t have different things and you can’t do anything against the rules. Plus you can’t do everything you want to do and you may live in fear of being released because of doing things wrong.

  3. Some rules that are important are like murder rules and rape rules and vicious crimes. Plagarism and copyrights are important because you are using others work. But there are rules that are hard to follow. Some of these are dress codes and someone telling you what to eat. You can't tell me what I want to eat. But some crimes are serious are punished which is beneficial to our society.

  4. some of the rules that would be beneficial is having bikes instead of cars. That is a good rule because it reduces the emissions so that there is less pollution. Some rules that would be hard to implement is telling people what they should do. if you have control over what everyone does they might not want to follow it. Those are some of the pros and cons of the rules.

  5. Our society in this day in age is a very accepting society. All differences are seen as just the many different ways a person is unique. In the Giver, differences are seen as weakness. It causes people to look at them as outcasts, rather than just another one of the citizens in a community. I think rules are good, but not in a high quantity. For example, many rules led to revolutions and governments being overthrown. Too many rules threaten independence and the ability to be free. They contain you, which can be good too. Good, well thought out rules, can stop bad things from happening. This is why we have things that are illegal. Our government did a good job (in my opinion) of putting laws in place without taking away our Independence. Also, rules can stop bullying. If there are school uniforms (which is a rule), it can stop people making fun of students. But, it can also take away the students' liberty of expressing their emotions by choosing clothing that they personally like. In my opinion, restricting food consumption to a reasonable amount based on BMI would be a very hard rule to follow, and may would lead to protesters, but it could also be good. It would urge the overweight people of the society to get into shape. This could stop any bulling happening to them because they are "Fat". This rule would be extremely hard to follow because all people eat a different amount and it is something no one thinks about. No one would like the rule, because it is a basic liberty to everyone. But, it would stop any poor people not getting enough food. In conclusion, rules are good, but should be restricted to a reasonable amount.

  6. I think that so many rules would not be necessary in our community. I like how in our community if you are different that is not a bad thing. I wouldn't want to follow any of the small rules in that society. Rules like when you can ride a bike, how to wear your hair, and what your job should be, should be up to you and not others. Other rules that may help make the society better like no rudeness or bragging would be hard to follow. If you think about it you brag about yourself your favorite sports team and even your own family. Even if you made a rule against it, the rule would still be broken. Although people do want to fit in they should also be able to set new trends instead of follow them. This is how I feel on the rules in the community.

  7. Well in social media and things that become public, it says things that you have to have to be popular or beautiful. It definitely puts pressure on insecure people to buy products that don't even help. The pros of having many rules would be that there would be less crime, especially when rebellion is frowned upon. It would be easier to control the society. Cons would be that uprisings and broken rules would be treated more harshly because there are so many rules to remember. It's hard to have a lot of rules and not have irrelevant rules. I think a rule like the assignment and appeals would make sure everyone who lives in the society gets a job, but Not being allowed to lie would be way too hard to follow, and reporting stirrings to your parents. Since those feelings are natural and pleasant, some kids would rebel and try to create secret love.

  8. In The Giver, the children are told exactly what to do, when to do it, what to wear, and how to blend into the community. There are many pros and cons dues to having so many rules. One pro would be that, since everyone is following the rules and told what to do it wouldn't be so hard to fit in or to make friends. Also, since everyone is told what to do, people with decision problems like me wouldn't have to worry about making decisions. A con would be having to be released, with no third chance, as to committing a crime or breaking the rules or laws. also, no one really knows except for the makers as to what the term "being released" meant. Another con would be the community being so perfect and everyones futures are already planned with detail that it gets suspicious. A rule that would be beneficial to our society would be 2 child per family unit and also everyone being assigned a job, so that everyone is employed. I think all or almost all the rules are hard to follow because we couldn't make any mistakes.

  9. In the Giver, children are told what to do and what they cannot do. This takes away the children's ability to think outside of the box. Also if someone is different from others, then that does not mean that they should be "released." The rules that would be difficult to follow are sharing your feelings and dreams and the Elders get to choose your spouse and career. In our society, sharing your dreams and feelings would be a bad idea since anyone can easily lie. A career and spouse can only be chosen by the person her/his self. The community in the Giver is tremendously different than our society, so there are barely any rules that would be beneficial to our society.

  10. There are many rules that our society does not have that the community does. We should have the rules they do so our society can be made better. One of those rules can be about the clothing people wear these days. We should have a rule on what to wear to school. Some people wear different clothes and because of that, they're sometimes made fun of. If we have a uniform, everyone wears the same thing. Many people wear inappropriate clothes and if we have uniforms that can be avoided. Another rule can be the one about doing volunteer work. If we do volunteer work it can help us with getting better jobs. We would know what we want to do by the time it's time for us to get a job and work. These are a couple of the rules I think our society should have.

  11. One of the pros of having rules like those in The Giver is that no one will be made fun of for being slow or not learning to do something at a certain age. Another pro about the rules is that people won't be doing things they aren't supposed to at a young age and messing up, like crashing your bike. One of the cons to the rules in The Giver is that it could slow down your development of responsibility. If you can't ride a bike until you are 8 years old, it may take a while to learn where you could have already been a pro at it had you have started when you felt it was possible. It isn't good to become dependent on other people for your transportation.
I think that the rule of having to wait until adulthood to get married could be beneficial to society. In some countries, people are forced to marry as early as ten years old, which is too early to become that independent. Also, some people just make bad decisions about things like when to marry. The rules of getting a bike at eight and wearing designated clothes for your age would be difficult to implement and follow. The bike rule is even broken in Jonas's perfect community, so we could never follow it. It should be our decision, as long as we use them the right way. Kids would be too tempted to follow the rule when their siblings have bikes and some may not want to ever even ride a bike. As for the designated clothing for each age rule, that would also be impossible to follow. People should have the right to express themselves and there would be protests if this law was implemented. Nobody would want to look the same as their friends or wear the same thing everyday.

  12. At this age, everyone is pressured to fit in and to have all the latest trends. There are pros and cons to having an extreme amount of rules. I think one of the rules that would be beneficial to our society that is also in The Giver is being given assignments. Sometimes in our world, people have jobs they hate. When they hate their jobs, they perform poorly or may even abuse their rights that come with the job. I also think having a rule of being told when to do certain things may help our community. Some people do things at inappropriate times, and this causes chaos. The book's community seems very orderly, and I think being told when to do certain things contributes to this. There are also rules that would not work in our society. One major rule that would be a complete failure in our society is being told what to wear. Many people use their clothing and accessories as ways to express themselves and be unique, and I think being told what to wear could cause serious problems. This also relates to the rule of blending in, which in our community wouldn't work since many people view blending in as "boring". I also think the rule of having only two children would be difficult to follow. A lot of people want more than two children, and I do not think this rule would be successful in a society that already has a lot of kids. Overall, having so many rules has its cons and pros.

  13. There are many rules in life and some can be beneficial and some may be difficult. Here are some beneficial rules. One beneficial rule would be all children must have an education. This would help so each child could get a great job and have a more equal chance at life. A rule that would be hard to follow is no hoarding food. This would be hard to follow because what if your hungry and there is no food around I personally would not like to take a long walk just to get maybe a light snack. Another beneficial rule is that you do not get to choose what you wear. This helps avoid peer pressure and other worrying factors. One final rule that may always be broken is no riding a bike till age 9. That rule is hard to follow because it would not be fair for a child to just get a bike and expected to ride it with no problems. Those are a few beneficial and hard to follow rules.

  14. There are pros and cons of having so many rules in a community. Pros are that the community would be very organized. We would know what and what not to do. I think discipline rules would be beneficial to our society because if someone breaks a rule, the punishment can be given. Cons to having many rules is not remembering them. There might be so many rules that people could forget and might accidently break a rule. A rule that might be hard to follow is one in the Giver: children under nine years old are not allowed to learn how to ride bikes. Most kids these days learn around six or seven. That rule would be difficult to follow in our community today.

  15. In a society like the one in The Giver there are many pros and cons to their rules. Some of the pros are that there are few conflicts, everyone feels that they have their place in society, and that everything is neat and orderly. One of the main cons to having a lot of rules is that you never get to feel free or take action against anything that you believe in. I think that everyone should cause at least a little bit of trouble in their lifetime and the rules prevent this. Some of the rules would be beneficial to our society like the rule about no bragging or being rude. There are some people out there that brag too much or are just too rude. One of the rules that would be hard to follow would be the one that you are assigned to a family instead of having an actual blood-related mom or dad. That could make it hard to connect with your family. Overall having rules like in The Giver would be both a positive thing and a negative thing.

  16. In The Giver, the children are told exactly what to do, when to do it, what to wear, and how to blend into the community. If we were to have so many rules, where no one could be different, bullying would become less of a problem. As I have observed in the book, no one purposely hurts another. The only apologies in the book so far have been made for arriving to class late and disrupting other students, or for using the wrong adjective, both made by Asher. No one really does anything bad, since people are already aware of the punishments and the effect it will have on you throughout your time in the community.
Certain rules may be beneficial though, but only to a certain extent. For example, people dress alike. This means that there isn't much room to express opinion through clothing. People should have the right to wear whatever they want, as long as it isn't so strange or crazy that it causes a scene. Usually places do have rules for clothing. Some restaurants require a more formal dress attire, while other restaurants are more flexible. This is just the way the restaurant wants to be presented. They don't want people in pajamas pants when they have a five star restaurant. The point is, sometimes having restrictions can be beneficial, but too many of them can be hurtful. If the restaurant only allowed people wearing a certain shirt by a certain brand, not many people would go there, and it would hurt the business.

  17. The pros to having a lot of rules are that you know exactly what to do, when to do it, and how. The cons to having so many rules are that people will start to disobey them in the slightest possible ways. The rule about kids doing service hours would definitely benefit the community in many ways. It gets work done and it gets the kids faces out and to the community. The rule that would be hard to implement in our society would be how to dress. Dressing a certain way is a way of expressing yourself. Many people would not follow that rule.

  18. A rule that would be beneficial to our society is everyone wearing the same thing at the same age. This rule would create less pressure for everyone to dress the same. Another rule that would be beneficial to our society is everyone being assigned a job/role. This way there would be no unemployment. A rule that would be difficult to follow is the rule about everyone riding a bike. Cars are the main transportation and everyone is not in shape to ride a bike. Another rule that would be hard to follow is the rule about sharing feelings with your family. Some people may have a hard time expressing themselves. Therefore, so many rules may be very beneficial but others may be difficult to follow.

  19. In the book "The Giver" there are many rules in their community. There are pros and cons to having so much rules. One of the pros to having rules is that it will form a more civilized community. This means that there will be no other clothes besides the uniform they are given. Some people like this some don't. Another pro of having so many rules is that there will be a lot less crimes. I say this because with all the rules anyone who commits a crime will get punished and will be sent out of the community. Now let's get into the cons of having all of the rules. The first and major con of having all of the rules is that some people might not agree with them. That would cause a problem. Another con would be if someone didn't agree with the age code. What I mean by this is that the ages when kids get stuff. Like at 8 you get your stuffed animal taken away. Also, after three years as being a birth mother you get sent over to be a laborer, where you serve your entire adult life as a laborer until you get to the House of the Old. Those are some of the pros and cons of having so many rules.

  20. There are many pressures of wanting to fit in in today's society. If you dress one way, speak like this or do something everyone else is doing you are casted out and deemed as a freak and a loser. Trying to fit in is a unspoken rule. But in The Giver with all the actual strict rules and differences being actually frowned apon, that is a whole new extreme. I think if we actually had that many rules the benefits would be that no one could be judged for being different because we are all the same. But if you somehow were different it would be a whole new level of being abused and picked on. I think the rule of no bragging would be beneficial to society. It would prevent many hurt feelings and stop certain people from being braggarts and rude to people. I think that that rule would be hard to control now because people wind ways to compliment themselves in a slick way while also putting others down. People have learned to twist words very well. So I think a few rules would be helpful, but to many isn't. And if the rules can actually be enforced I think it would help society.

  21. Some of the rules for the community in the Giver could be beneficial for our society. One of those is the rule that prevents people from hoarding food. I think that this would be beneficial because, all around the world there is hunger, and if you could prevent people from hoarding food that number of hungry people would go down. Another rule that would benefit our society is the rule that causes people to be released after doing 3 major crimes. This would be good because the crime in our society would go significantly down. Therefore some of the rules in their society would benefit our society greatly.
In the Giver society there are also many rules that are hard to follow. A rule that would be hard to follow is the rule that requires you to have a lot of service hours. That would be hard to do because service just really isn't fun at all and it sounds like you would have to do a ton of hours. Also a rule that seems like it would be hard to follow is the one where young girls have to wear hair bows all the time. This would be hard because the girls might not be able to tie them very well, and they might come undone and fall out. As a conclusion some of the rules would be very hard to follow.
