Pd. 1- Community

As you can tell from the story, the community in The Giver is quite different than the community we live in. From what you have read about it so far, would you want to live in that community? Why or why not? Explain your answer.

  1. No, I think their crazy rules are too strict and I would rather live in an environment were I have the freedom of choice. Also, this "release" thong scares me because if you get old or make just three mistakes your out of a home. Its a crazy place but I'd rather live there then nowhere, but I'd rather live here then there.

  2. No I would not like to live in their community because their community just isn't right for me. Their rules are really straight forward and they're really serious. If you lose all your chances then you would be released. I would not like to live in a community like that. They don't live the way we do now. They have lots of weird rules. One including that you can't ride a bike until you're nine. That's a really uncommon rule. They rely on a group of elders to release them. That community is just not right for me and I wouldn't want to live there.

  3. I think that the society in The Giver is different than ours right now. I don't think I would like to live in the community from The Giver though. On reason I wouldn't want to live there is because of the strict rules they have in place. Some of them include how you dress and look, how many members are allowed in a family unit, and even if they take a third chance they get released from the community. Another reason for not wanting to live in that kind of community is that the head of it has eyes on you at all times. Imagine a person looking at screens all day of what your doing, saying, and feeling, weird right? The last reason I'd rather stay in my own society is that they all have to look and act in a 'perfect' way. I don't like the idea of being the same as someone else, I'd rather be more independent and on my own for things. Overall I'd have to say that I would definitely pick our community over theirs any day.

  4. Considering what I have read from The Giver so far I think that I can safely say that I would not want to live in a place like that. They don't have much freedom to do what they would like. They have to be assigned to a family unit and they can't even have their own kids. Not only that but when they see the child it wasn't them that named it. There's also the fact that they can't do things till certain ages, like get bikes and the jobs they have are chosen for them. There's also only two chances before someone gets released. The whole community seems strange and very uncomfortable to me.

  5. From what I have read so far, I would not want to live in Jonas' Community because there seems to be too much pressure on following the rules, which can be insane in themselves, and I do not always follow the rules. Some of the rules seem too RIDICULOUS, like not letting your kid start riding a bike till nine, or not being able to fly over the community. And one more reason why I wouldn't want to live their is because you get assigned your job and you cannot change it, even if you dont like your job....

  6. In 'The Giver' The community is much different then ours is. In Jonas's community, everyone seems to act perfectly. The community is very strict as to the people's freedom. For example, each family unit is only allowed to own two children; one female, and one male. All the children born in the same year turn different ages together, and after 12, you are assigned a job until you are old enough to be "released" from the community. Every family seems to follow the same exact same lifestyle. Also, if you make three acknowledged mistakes, you are released from the community which i assume is the same thing as being banished. I would not want to live in a community like the one in the book. I wouldn't have much freedom, and I'd be very annoyed with the specific ways of doing things. Of course if I only ever lived there, I wouldn't know any different. Compared to how we live now, however, I wouldn't choose to live where Jonas does.

  7. From what I have read from the story, I do not wish to live in a community like the one that Jonas lives in. The community in the story is very strict about their laws and you are practically always being watched. In the story, Jonas took an apple from school and the loudspeaker addressed him without saying his name, that you may not take food from school and hoard it. For these reasons, I would not want to live in the community that Jonas lives in

  8. I would not want to live in that community because there is no self expression or originality. In that community everyone gets a job, serves their time, and then waits to die. No one gets to do anything that they actually enjoy and they all except it. The community in "The Giver" is more of a jail that you live in for a life sentence than a place where you would want to live. Everything is so bland and there is no meaning in living in such a place where there is no creativity.

  9. To want to live in the community in The Giver would be crazy. I would not want to live in that community. They have so many rules and if u break them 3 times you are "released". Here you can break the rules a lot of times, you are punished, but you can still break them. I would hat to live in The Giver community.

  10. The community in The Giver is a lot different from the community that we live in. I would like to live in my community for a couple reasons. One reason is that I care about how I look. All of the people in The Giver dress and look relatively similar and they never look in mirrors. Another reason is that I want to spend my teenage years like a regular kid, not by working for a job that I'll be doing forever. Finally, I wouldn't be able to use very particular vocabulary because I'm always being sarcastic and exaggerating. In conclusion, I'd like to remain in my own community.

  11. If I had the choice to live the community, I wouldn't take it. I believe that this community is quite strange. The government and people to be strict and identical. I would hate being identical to everyone, and I would miss my freedom and my liberty that I have in our community.

  12. From what we have read so far, I would not want to be part of that community. I say this because I would want to change my job at one point. Maybe because I got tired of it. Another reason is that they do not drive cars. No one there. Every single person rides a bike. Now, in some cases, it is good. A reason of good could be that you always get exercise. Therefore, you are staying in shape. Another good example of this community is that you will always have a job. That is of course if you do not get released. Which is a very prime example of being a complete failure to the community. Overall, I would not want to live in such a community.

  13. I would definitely do not want to live there not because it is nothing like the world I live in but because that is very weird in many ways. First, EVERYBODY looks similar, they celebrate death of old and have very strict rules. I don't even think they come from the same mother. How do you live with people that are not related to you in anyway? These people are just so stupid. They give you jobs instead of you picking your job. But they do celebrate your birthday but that ends at twelve years old or should say when they are a twelve. No cars, you ride bikes, and you have a speaker that gives announcements throughout the whole city, they even might be talking about you in a crude way without clearly saying it.

  14. I wouldn't like to live in the community from the book because of many reasons. One of the most severe reasons is that all humans make mistakes and I wouldn't like to be released after my third mistake. Another reason the people in the community don't know what is on the outside of the community. Also, I wouldn't like to share my feelings with my family every single night. In addition, you don't even get to see your real birth mother. And the community doesn't take nudity as people in America would. Therefore, I wouldn't like to live in the community from the book.

  15. I would not want to live in this community because there isn't very much freedom. Everything in their life is regulated, so they never have any choices.
