Period 1- Rules

In The Giver, the children are told exactly what to do, when to do it, what to wear, and how to blend into the community. Differences are not celebrated. Think about the pressures that sometimes come at your age with wanting to fit in and having all of the latest trends. Consider the pros and cons of having so many rules. Which rules do you think would be beneficial to our society? Which rules would be difficult to follow or implement? Explain your answer in paragraph form.

  1. some of the pros about this is no one will have there self-esteem destroyed because of how they look. some of the cons would have to be not a lot of curiosity in the community because of all the restrictions and u wont be free to choose your own path.

  2. There are a lot of rules in the Giver, I think that having rules is important to keep people from messing up each other and the environment even more then we already do, but to many rules can be ridiculous. Beneficial rules include important things like, don't kill people or animals for no reason, don't build on protected land, and population laws should be existent because there are way too many people (over 6 billion!). Though there can be "dumb" rules like "all girls need to wear a hair tie till the age of eight" as we see in the Giver.

  3. I think that some of the rules in "The Giver" could be useful in our society today, but some wouldn't be so helpful. I think that wearing the same thing is a good thing that could help improve society. With everyone dressing the same in town, there would be less bullying because everyone's practically the same, and most bullying is about someone's looks. And since there's less bullying, we would save more lives, considering some kids end their lives to end the bullying. I think that people being told what their job is and when to do it wouldn't be a good idea. I don't think so because people should be able to work with whatever interests them and have fun with it. They should also be able to go to work whatever time they want to because different jobs have different hours they have to work. Overall I have to say some of the rules from "The Giver" can be applied to our community, but some can't.

  4. I believe that some rules would be beneficial to todays society. The rule about being released after 3 mistakes would apply because all the criminals and bad people in modern society would be gone. But also I believe that they should give you more then 3 mistakes because everyone messes up now-and-then.
I believe that the pills rule would be hard to follow at first. But like in the story I think that we would get used to it and it would become almost second nature. Also if I were a girl I think that it would be hard to keep the bows in my hair all the time.

  5. In the novel the Giver, the children are told exactly what to do, when to do it, and how to blend into the community. Some of the rules in the novel would be beneficial to our society such as the rule about not bragging and picking on people for their differences. I think that this would benefit our society greatly because kids tend to be cruel nowadays towards each other . Although there are also difficult rules to follow such as everyone has to wear the same cloth when their in the same age group. I feel like some kids would want to express themselves in the way they dress so that could be an obstacle. Another rule that would be hard to follow is the rule in which you try to blend in into the community. Everyone is different and therefore you can't expect them to act the same. These are some of the rules that would be beneficial to our society and others that would be hard to follow and not beneficial.

  6. There would be many pros and cons with all of these rules. Some pros would be that it would be hard to stick out. No one would be different and no bullying would occur. One con is that you could not be yourself. Having to loo the same and act the same, you cant be yourself. One rule that would be beneficial to our society is that differences are not celebrateed. THis will stop bullying. One that would be hard to follow is the having to drress the same. You could not be yourself

  7. With having so many rules in the community, everything will be so organized, with trends everybody will look similar ,and differences are not celebrated. One is riding the bikes, the bikes are safe and could prevent many deaths to our society and pollution. But the beneficial reason they ride bikes is that the community is very small. But ours is small too but imagine riding bikes all over Philly or NYC or LA. I think it's is hard to imagine our society like theirs

  8. I think a beneficial rules in our society is being told what to do. In school we need order or we wouldn't get any work done. We wouldn't even learn and it would be chaos. The laws and rules that set us in order are beneficial. Being told what to do is giving direction and giving guidance. We learn things by being told what to do.
A rule that doesn't benefit people in any way is the uniform. Clothes are a form of originality. Clothes are a form of creativity. The clothes people wear can help them express themselves. I don't like the clothes rule because there is no self expression and the world is very bland.

  9. I think that all of the rules would be beneficial to our society because it would keep everyone safe and happy. Too many of these rules would cause the people to feel controlled and unhappy.
The rule about bragging would be hard to follow because if you do good on a test or in sports, it is easy to talk about it to make you feel good.

  10. In The Giver, there is a certain way of doing things that is considered right. If things are done differently, they are frowned upon by the whole community. In our community today, there are also pressures that we face to "fit in" in society. We are afraid of being judged. Everyone wants to dress the same, look the same, talk the same, and have the same belongings as other people. The idea of being different, and being recognized scares people, because they don't want to be noticed. Blending in seems easier then standing out. The rules in Jonas's community might maintain order, and keep things calm and organized, but also it crushes the chance of something special. I think a rule that might be beneficial is the one where bragging isn't allowed. It helps prevent bad feelings about yourself in comparison to others. A rule that might be hard to follow however, is the one where everyone is required to ride a bike after the age of nine. Our town is extremely big, so it would be very difficult to drive everywhere.

  11. In the community of The Giver, everything is so strict. There are many rules in this society, and they must be followed. Anyone who fails to do so has to face consequences. In every community, however, there should be some rules. In our society, we should enforce the differences rule. People should celebrate them, notice them, and be proud of them. But absolutely no one should make fun of anyone else's differences. It's not right, and it definitely upsets people. Some rules are difficult to follow. For example, if we were to have the rule about dressing the same and looking the same as everyone else, that would but difficult. I know for a fact I would have a hard time with that one. Not everyone looks the same. We should all embrace our differences and not try to look the same. I like looking different then everyone else, so I would hate this rule. There are many other rules that would be hard to apply to our community and society, but that was just one example.

  12. There are many rules that can be beneficial to our society and rules that can be difficult to follow. An example to a beneficial rule would be to no form of bullying what-so-ever. Even though bullying is not tolerated in our school district, doesn't mean that it still doesn't happen out of school. If this were to be a rule, kids and teenagers wouldn't have to worry about someone making fun of their differences or saying that they don't fit in. A rule that would be difficult to follow is being prevented from doing things until certain ages. Being prevented from doing things before a certain age would be really hard to do because of the temptations. For example, if you weren't allowed to ride a bike until you were ten years old. When you see the other ten-year-olds riding around you might get tempted to try it out since it seems fun. In conclusion, there are many rules that could be beneficial or rules that would be difficult to follow in our society.

  13. In The Giver, the children are told exactly what to do. Everything they do is dictated, and controlled. At our age, there are many pressures with wanting to fit in. We always want to make sure we are following the latest, because the last thing we want is to be 'different.' Indifference at our age is something that isn't always accepted. We as adolescents make sure we are following the trends, so we can blend in perfectly. There are many pros and cons to having many rules. For pros; We wouldn't worry about being different, since everyone is made to be alike. We don't have to worry about keeping up with trends, since everything is already planned. The cons would be that we couldn't be ourselves. We would be just like everyone else, and we would never really have a different character or personality. Some rules that could be beneficial to our society is the freedoms that are added as we get older. I believe these things would be beneficial, so we can mature and grow at a more constant rate. I believer that small rules such as not being able to take food home would be hard to keep up with, because people blindly commit these errors everyday without knowing. There would be many pro's and also many con's to having so many rules.

  14. At my age, there are some pressures to want to fit in or maybe follow all the latest trends. One could be that we, as kids, want to look like our heroes, or our role models. That could range from how we act to what we wear. Some pros of this society is that there is no outsiders. The citizens are all the same. How some can mess up at some points, sometimes more frequent than others, it isn't brought up. Cons could be that if you want to try something, there are limits to what and how you have to do it. Some things you might want to do or try could be prohibited. Meaning that it isn't allowed. In our society, I think that riding bikes would be beneficial. I think this because it cuts down on the pollution. Even though our society is rather large, I think that it would still be a good idea. Some rules that would be tough would be stuff like chastisement. We as people are always going to want to sometime brag about something that is going on in our lives. This is a rule in the book, "The Giver". That would be a main example, but that is just about the only main rule that would often or hard to not be broken.

  15. In the book, kids are told what to do. all the time. Sometimes kids in our society are pressured into wearing certain clothes or fitting-in. In this society, this is not a problem, because everyone wheres the same clothes, same ribbons, everything. But they do not always seem to like it, like Lily didn't like her ribbons to be so tight. It would be bad because you could not show your differences. It would edventually get boring

  16. In the giver, kids are constantly being monitored by others in the community. They must do exactly what they are told, and wear exactly what they are given. If these rules are not followed, a child could get in serious trouble and possibly; although this rarely occurs, get released. These rules would cause some serious problems if applied today. Kids now a days wear whatever they want, as long as it is appropriate. If rules like the ones in Jonas's community were applied today, kids would be outraged and I'm sure some parents would be aggravated as well. One pro that I could think of for the rules in Jonas's community would be that all the kids in that age group would look the same. Therefore, no one could feel left out and not worry about fitting in with all of the latest trends.

  17. Some of the pros of having so many rules is good especially when it comes to school and clothes. Many kids get bullied everyday because of what clothes they wear. Sometimes its so severe that some people kill themselves because they feel that's the only answer left. Another pro is that you wouldn't be made fun of because of where you come from, your ethnic group, or what your differences may be. Some cons is that you never get a chance to feel true emotions. Even though you have this stirrings in your dream, you have to take pills to make you forget. Another con would be that you don't get to be free, unique, or be yourself. You don't get to discover who you really are, just something that somebody wants you to be. Some rules that would be beneficial to our society is that there should be no bragging of anything or no bullying. The rules that would be difficult to follow or implement is how you would bathe a elderly from head to toe and see there nakedness, how you can't really comment on people, and how you don't use mirrors and the cutting of your hair.

  18. With the many strict rules that all citizens must follow in the community in The Giver, I don't think any of the rules that we don't already have would be beneficial to our own society and world. I think this because in our world, differences are important. They make us human and make us all unique. Trying to force people to be the same never works in the end, simply due to human nature. As such, I think all of the rules trying to force people to be the same would not work for long in the real world due to our natural desire to be unique. Overall, I believe that humans are beings who strive to fit in, but by human nature we are all simply unique, and want to express this.

  19. In our society, we have many rules. These rules are very different than the rules in The Giver. The rules in The Giver are very specific and limit differences. For our society, these rules would be both good and bad. They would be good for two reasons. One reason is that there wouldn't be any bullying if everyone is the same. Another reason is that you wouldn't have to waste time and money on your appearance. People today waste so much money on the latest clothes, beauty products, etc. Without having to worry about any of that, we'd be rich. The rules in The Giver would be bad for two reasons also. One reason is that life would be completely different. Many people express their personality through their appearance. Another reason is that life wouldn't be fun. If everyone is just like a robot, there's nothing to live for. Life is about discovery and curiosity, not doing the same thing over and over! In conclusion, if we had the rules from The Giver, it'd be good as well as bad.
