Period 2- Inferences

Describe the theories you have developed through inferences about the community Jonas lives in. How do those theories conflict with how you live and what you know about the society you live in? Explain your answers.

  1. I've inferred that Jonas's community is organized and has many rules. There is rules about almost everything. If we lived there, it would definitely be different and we might not be able to do some things we do today. I have also inferred that in their community, everything and everyone is the same. It seems dull and boring. In our society, everyone is different in their own way. We also have an exciting-looking community. We have different buildings, homes, and entertainment. I think Jonas's community has all the same houses, which makes it seem boring.

  2. Jonas lives in the type of community that is meant to be a nice tranquil place to live, but actually has it’s issues. Yes someone in the community knows what happened in the past, but everyone does not. That would be like having to do a report on a war and have to go and ask someone about it before you can do it yourself, or to learn about relatives that have passed. That would be so weird for there to be one place, one person that knows everything. Nothing is passed from generation to generation which is kinda different.

  3. I believe the founders of Jonas’ society were trying to make their society perfect. In order to do this they took out everything they thought would be cause harm to their society. This is why they have so many rules against the things we do everyday like lie, not apologize, and make fun. I think they also took away the feelings of a teen because those thoughts can sometimes lead to bad things. If we had these rules in our society then probably most of us would be in jail. Growing up we didn’t do bad things, but we didn’t have such strict rules. I don’t think our society could live under the same ways Jonas’ community lives

  4. After reading, I can say that the community in what Jonas lives in is very suspicious, creepy, secretive, and is extremely different from nowadays where kids know everything from many places like the internet, on TV, through families, friends, and relatives, and by observing people around us. On the other hand, both adults and kids have no clue what the simplest and essential elements of everyday life are. They don't know what downhill is, what snow is, what sleds are, and what sunshine is preferring to or is generated from.

  5. The theories that I have developed about Jonas' community are that I think they cannot see colors and they do not get emotionally attached to anyone. Jonas seems to be only one with the Capacity to See Beyond which might be the capacity to see in colors. The pills that everyone takes for stirrings are suppressing their emotions and they are preventing the community members from getting attached to each other. These theories conflict in how I live. I can see colors and so can everyone else around me. Colors are used to describe the world in which we live in and for me it would be impossible to even imagine a world without the blue of the sky and the yellow of the sun. In the society that I live in people are attached to each other in one way or the other. Families stick together forever, friends care about each other, and neighbors help one another. In Jonas' community, family units are assigned to each other, so they may not really care about each other that much as families in my society.

  6. some theories i have developed about jonas's community is that they are very organized. the also have many rules to keep their citizens in check. they are also very truthful and also follow these rules. What i know is that there are many problems in the society. Many of the people in our community dont follow the rules in our society and in jonas's.

  7. So far from what we have read of The Giver, I have come up with several theories. I think the way Jonas and his community members live is harder than what we experience. The way they have to be assigned (or selected) something they have to do. The way the Receivers 'job' is described, physically painful and lonely, sounds as if it's be a very hard thing to do, which it could be, but I think Jonas is right for this. He is a smart and strong kid and I am pretty sure he will be able to do what he has to as being the new Receiver. In the world we live in, though, it is different. We can be who we want to be. We have nothing like this in our society. There are lots of occupations we have to choose from, they do too, but we get to pick what we want. They are assigned (or selected) what they have to do. I think the lives we live are easier than the lives the people of that community live.

  8. I am sort of confused by this question, but I am going to go with my gut feeling of what it is asking:
I have developed a theory in the story. I think that the story takes place in the future after a lot of years of poverty, hunger, and war. Some scientists got together and wanted to make a perfect community. They didn't want all the memories of the past world to disappear when they died, so they have a "Receiver". This could never happen in my community because there would be rebellions against the idea of wiping everything from everyone's memory and starting fresh. Also, some people would not like the idea that random people have total control of their mindset. this idea would not survive very long in my community.

  9. In the story "The Giver" we can make a lot of inferences based on Jonas' community. One inference we can make about Jonas' community is that it is probably on a climate control. What I mean by this is that instead of making it rain whenever it has to rain, a little pad might control the weather. Unless you live in one of the southern most states then you should definitely experience snow. In Jonas' lifetime at age 12 Jonas has never experienced snow before. That is very odd. In my community since I don't live in a southern most state I experience snow every winter. Winter for us is from December to March. Another inference I can make about Jonas' community is that his community is very strict. Their community has rules for EVERYTHING and EVERYONE. The community has privileges for every age no matter the age. For example at age 12 you are accepted as an adult and are given your job. In our community, to be considered an adult you have to be around 18. If you are not 18 people still think of you as kids.

  10. Based on inferences I have made about the community Jonas lives in, I have developed a theory. I think that only the citizens with light or pale eyes can become Receivers. The book describes citizens in Jonas's community as all very similar, and most of them have dark eyes. Not only is it rare to have pale eyes, but it is also uncommon to be given the assignment "Receiver of Memory". I think this is due to the fact that people with pale eyes have special qualities about themselves that are needed in order to be a receiver. How I live and the society I live in are very contradictory to this theory. In our society, needing to have pale eyes in order to get a job would be considered discrimination. Also, pale eyes are not rare. While there are many other theories I have, this is one that stands out to me.

  11. Based on what I have read so far in The Giver I have come up with a couple of theories about life in their community. First I think that the people are made to believe that there is nothing besides their world and that everything that they know is all that there is to know about the world. This is very different from our community because we have the right to explore anything that we are curious about which is what people have done so that we can find things out for ourselves. As far as I am concerned we can know as much information as we choose to. Another theory that I have made up about the community in The Giver is that some people suspect that life really isn’t as perfect as it seems just they don’t want to bring it up because that would probably be against the law. This is also different from our community in America because we have the freedom of speech so if we believe in something or want to say what we think we are allowed to do that without getting in trouble. Also our world isn’t perfect and that is known to most people so no one really has suspicions.

  12. Throughout the book I have developed many theories and inferences about life in Jonas's community. Some of these theories like could conflict with how I live and how our community works today. Some theories that conflict with how we live today are that there are no emotions in Jonas's community. I created this theory because for example when Jonas had stirrings his mom gave him a pill to get rid of them. This suggests that they get rid of unwanted emotions. This would conflict with having a relationship, making friends on your own, or even having sympathy for a friend in troubled times. With out these feelings a huge part of daily feelings like love and sadness would be gone and life would be boring or even, without sadness if you are not sad at a huge disappointing or saddening moment, it could be a disgrace or rudeness to a certain group or person. That is one theory that could conflict with daily life in my community.

  13. I think in Jonas community's way of living is different from our society. They have one person carry the memories of the world while in our society most of us have our own memories. We don't get other people's memories. We live much differently today. We actually have color. In that society they don't have color. Color gives you variety which they don't have. It is honestly sad to not have color then clothes and other objects are dull.

  14. Jonas's society has many rules and is different from our community. That doesn't mean that it's the wrong way of living, but it isn't much preferred by me. I think that a person being released from the community is a little bit wrong. The elderly should be able to live and grow up with their kids and grand children. The community should have color and feeling... just the way we live!

  15. I have developed many theories about Jonas's community though out the book. Some of those are, how they don't get to chose their families. That conflicts with our community because if we didn't get to chose who we got to marry there would be a lot of outcry' and people would not be okay with it. Another theory that would conflict with how we live is the fact that people could only have one boy and one girl. Some people would want to have more children, or maybe wouldn't want to have a boy, or have a girl. A final conflict that we would have in our society is the fact that the kids are expected to bathe the elderly. We woudl have problems with that because in our society that isn't seen as normal. Therefore there are a lot of conflicts that we would have with the things in Jonas's community.

  16. Some theories I have developed through inferences about the community Jonas lives in are that people help others truly from the goodness of their heart and that there really aren't any choices. These theories conflict in the society I live in because usually, people don't help others unless they're looking for some sort of award or recognition. In Jonas' society, they do that because they're supposed to, and it is from what they feel is good. Also, in my society there are always choices, but in Jonas', there aren't any choices.

  17. I think that the community is trying to control its people by making them unable to choose anything for themselves. They don't let them choose their spouses or jobs so why would they do that is they weren't trying to make sure everything was a certain way that they wanted it to be. In our society we are able to choose many things from our job to even who rules our country. You can tell that even though the state controls many things they still want us to be able to choose somethings for ourselves, unlike Jonas's society.

  18. Some theories I have about Jonas' community is that his society is very strict and doesn't accept difference. The rules in the community go against doing things that would prevent you from being who you want to be. An example of this is that you can't choose your assignment and you have to follow every single rule or be released. This is almost opposite of how I live in my community. I can pick who I want to be and what I want to do. Also I can say what I want without worrying that I will be disciplined.

  19. In Jonas’ community they live in a different way than we do in todays community. For example they all have to be the same, do the same things, and live the same way. That is so much different than our community because we are taught to be unique and that difference is okay. They also can’t choose their own jobs they get assigned, but we do get to choose our jobs. Also their lives are all planned out for them while we get to choose what we want to do. Sure parents have certain hope they want us to achieve, but we get to make our own decisions, we get to live our own life, and we get to draw our own path.
