Period 1- Inferences

Describe the theories you have developed through inferences about the community Jonas lives in. How do those theories conflict with how you live and what you know about the society you live in? Explain your answers.

  1. I have developed a theory that this community takes place along side normal people, this dose not conflict with what I know about society. I think this because they can't get rid of hills and stuff, and its not like they've explored at all.

  2. I think the community that Jonas lives in is kind of scary when you think about it. They are restricted from many things. They also don't know about a lot of other things either. Jonas had no clue as to what snow is. He didn't even understand what "generations" were. The society I live in is completely different from Jonas'. I'm not sheltered and I have the freedom to do many things that Jonas does not.

  3. The community where Jonas lives in is very different than our community. Their community is very strict about rules and regulations. They have laws that determine your everyday life. Our society also has rules but aren't as strict as Jonas' society. An inference could be that most people in Jonas' community follow the rules but not all of them. People in that community follow the rules but not strictly all of them. Some people may break rules but most of the rules are straight forward for most people and different from our rules.

  4. I have made a few theories about the community that Jonas lives in. We recently read about when the giver is transmitting his knowledge to Jonas. They talk about 'sameness', which is executed in the community. There is climate control; Jonas doesn't know about sunlight. There is also no hills; the land is completely flat. This leads me to the theory that a long time ago, someone had a vision of the perfect community, and somehow, Jonas's community is closed in somewhere. They wouldn't be able to tell, because their community is the only way they know life. Another theory is that maybe Jonas and his community are being run by an outside force - maybe they are being spied on. These theories conflict with how we live, because to us these ideas seem impossible. We are used to doing things much different than Jonas, so our theories might be limited as far as or comprehension goes. Our society today is extremely free, and every student and adult knows about our worlds history from ages ago. It is much more open then in Jonas's community, where everyone seems to be protected, and out of harms way.

  5. I feel like that the community Jonas lives in has locked itself away from the rest of the world. The community seems more work than fun because the lack of electronics and how it seems like there is no economy in the community because of how everyone is the same and dresses the same.

  6. I believe that Jonas' community is all about honesty. No matter what, you told the truth. Even if it hurt, that is what you had to do. In our society, most people lie. Sometimes it may be for good, and to protect someone's feelings. Other times, lies are used to get away with mistakes. If we lived in a community when you always had to tell the truth, things would be a lot different. People would maybe be less sensitive because they would be used to hearing the truth instead of always being lied to. Also, in our society nowadays, everyone is dependent on any source of electronics to do everything for them. Computers basically control our lives lately. In Jonas' society, everything was done by hand. I don't know if people in my community would be used to that. Also, there are no cars where Jonas lives. They get to every place they need to be on bikes. America and most other places are so dependent on cars to get anywhere. People use cars as an excuse not to exercise and its easier to get places than to do physical work to get yourself somewhere. So Jonas' society and my own are very different.

  7. In The Giver, Jonas' community doesn't know much about the world around them, and doesn't have the same things we do here. For instance, they have controlled climate so they don't experience snow. Because of little things like these, it makes me look at the community somewhat uneducated because they don't know many of the simple things like we know it. Since the community doesn't really know what snow is, it makes me somewhat grateful that I do not live in a community like Jonas and that I live in the area I do. Since some parts of the world also don't get snow, they might not know what snow is like Jonas. Therefore, the differences between Jonas' community and my community differ to make it look at the society I live in differently.

  8. I have a few theories about the community Jonas lives in. The first, is that the community is on flat land. I believe this because The Giver gave Jonas the memory of sledding down a hill, and Jonas didn't know what "downhill" was or what a "hill" is, so I believe the community is on flatland. My next theory is that the community is concealed in someway. I think this because this community is under "Climate Control" and climate isn't really something we have much control over. I think they are in a concealed area because if the whole place is concealed, then a climate can possibly be controlled. l also believe that the community stays at room temperature, where you can't really feel a difference between warmth and cold. I think this because Jonas didn't know what it felt like to be cold, or to experience the heat in sunshine before he became The Receiver.

  9. One theory that I had is that probably there was a big event that happen such as a war or probably maybe pollution caused this. Pollution probably affected the weather. Possibly a nuclear war happen that devastated the world to the world they lived in. To prevent any conflicts they enforced those strict laws. In my society conflicts can happen in a blink of an eye.

  10. Throughout what I've read so far in the giver, I have developed some theories about the community. For instance, I think the community is someone placed inside a dome type structure. To support this theory, in one chapter, it states that the people in the community have the ability to control the climate. In order to control the climate, you need to be in some type of a closed area, such as a dome. This conflicts with how I live because in my society, we can not control the climate. This option is out of anyone's power, you can only control the climate in a closed place such as a room.

  11. I have developed a couple theories through inferences about Jonas' community. One is that I think that the community is in a dome, or closed off in some way. I think that because the Giver said that the community is climate controlled. You cant control a climate in an open area. Another theory is that maybe all adults are allowed to lie. So when Jonas asked his parents about what happened to the Receiver, they might've lied and said that they didn't know. In conclusion, inferences about the story made me think of some theories.

  12. While reading the book, I have came up with many theories about the community Jonas lives in. I believe that the community lives in a bubble, a giant dome. This dome protects them from the weather, sun, and it keeps them at a regular temperature. This makes everything easier; better crop growth, transportation. etc. This is very different compared to the society I live in. We have unpredictable weather, temperatures, etc.We are constantly having different seasons, and weather. This sometimes ruins crops, makes transportation unsafe, but my society copes with these things.

  13. In the Utopian community, The Elders have control over everything. Therefore in that community, you are not to use improper grammar, no lieing allowing, they have no hills what so ever, have total control over the weather, only have three books in their house, and much more. Our modern-day society that we live in, is different to the Utopian community/society. Most people lie, can look up what the weather is going to be like, know more then three books, use slang, have the freedom to do whatever we choose to do.The Utopian society is different from modern-day today.

  14. I have devolved some theories about the community. I believe that the council of elders is keeping a lot of secrets from the whole community. Jonas community is really different from ours. Our leaders tell us mostly what is happening in our communities and nations. I would not like it if Obama were to keep secrets from us; although I'm sure he does.

  15. Throughout the book, I've made many theories regarding the society Jonas lives in. One of these theories is that by restricting human choice and will, we can avoid nearly all of the things that plague our earth, such as hunger, war, crime, and disease. But this all comes at a very high cost, the cost being our humanity. This theory conflicts with most parts of my everyday life. Every day I'm presented with new opportunities to do something different, and to make my own choices, and I take this for granted. In Jonas's community, they have their entire everyday life planned out for them. Everyday choices are what make us human.

  16. I have many different theories about the community Jonas lives in. It is so different than where we live so I have been trying to think of the things they do to make it so the people don't know any different than their community. One theory is that they have a dome enclosing the whole community so it controls all the weather patterns. It must block out snow because Jonas doesn't know what it is. He also doesn't know what sunshine is so they don't have sun. They say this climate control is because crops can't grow with snow, but this contradicts itself because in our society we know plants can't grow without sunshine either. Another one of my theories based of the inference that plants can't grow without sunshine is that they must get their food from another outside community. All the rules in the community also lead me to develop an idea that there is something big the community is trying to hide from the people, not just the fact that they are trying to make it a community of sameness. These very strict rules they have in place in their community would conflict with how I live my life because I have never lived with so many rules and I would not be able to keep up with all the rules. In the society we live in there are rules but they are for more serious offenses and crimes, so living with rules like not pointing out peoples differences and not being able to lie would be very hard not to break. This is because everyone in our society looks very different, there is a large variety of different people. Many people also lie because it is to spare another persons feelings. Therefore this would be a huge conflict in the way we live in our society.

  17. I feel like Jonas lives under a dome. When you are released you go into the real world with hills and snow and sunburn. In our society we know everything. We are told and taught everything that is to learn. We know about weather geography and much more. Jonas and his community are way different than our society.

  18. Throughout the story, I have made any theories about the community Jonas lives in. These theories conflict with how I live and what i know in many ways. First off, one theory is that they do not let any body in or live there that do not match or fit in the community is some significant way. For example, skin color. Even just shades. This conflicts with the way i live because, in my community, we are people of all different skin tones, shades, colors, races, and religions. But we all make up one community together. Everybody is different. Also, they are given assignments based on what people want them to have and not what they want. They also receive them at age 12 and they have them for the rest of their lives. In my community, we get to go to school to train for about 18 years then we go to college then we apply for jobs we want. If we don't like our jobs we get to leave. Therefore, the theories about the community in the giver, conflict with how i live in my community in many ways.
