Period 5- How would you respond?

Think about what Maya is going through as she faces her life's challenges. How do you believe you would respond if you were faced with the same dilemma? Explain your answer thoroughly in a complete paragraph.

  1. Being from far away, Maya is facing many problems in America. Mostly, they are her parents and their old Kazakhstan traditions. If I were faced with some of the dilemmas that she were, I would've reacted in a totally different way. Her parents are always all over her when Nurzhan gets in trouble. I for one, don't think this is fair at all. Instead of just bowing my head and dealing with the injustice of the situation, I would probably be up and arguing. Of course, her parents do seem very different than the type of parents I'm used to, so I would probably get alot more punishment from her parents. I also would not have lessened a sibling's punishment or changed the words of a figure of authority. Overall, I would be upset with how unfair and not understanding that the parents were and probably would be alot more angered than scared.

  2. If I had been in the same situation as Maya, I probably would have told my dad the real thing the principal had said. I don't have enough gusto to do that, even though he probably wouldn't ever figure out what the principal said, I would feel so guilty knowing I had lied.

  3. If I was faced with the same dilemma, I would have probably responded differently. Maya was nervous although she bent the truth rather than telling the actual story to avoid being punished for not keeping her brother out of trouble. I probably would have told the whole truth and received the consequences. I would have also been nervous, like Maya. That is how I would react if I was in Maya's situation.

  4. If i were in Maya's dilemma I would probably respond in a positive way. First she moves out of a country with war, then she saves her brother from being in trouble. Those are all positives. The only dilemma she is in is that she didn't get to go to one gymnastics meet. Everything that I have read in this book has been good for Maya.

  5. Maya has to go through a lot since her family has just moved to the United States from another country. People are rude to her and her brother because of their language and cultural differences. At one point in my life, I was in the same situation that Maya is in right now. I used to live in Trenton but when I was five years old, I moved to Burlington Township. I am not good when it comes to making new friends because believe it or not, i can get shy at times and get afraid that I will not want to give up my old friends to make new ones. This made Burlington hard for me. I remember, I had this best friend, I think his name was Andrew Miller. I would call him Drew. We were so close and this was when I was like 4 so we would always wave out our windows since we lived across from each other and we would play in the pool together, and when it snowed, we would play in the snow all day until we got so cold that we had to go inside for hot cocoa. When I found out that we were moving, I was so upset because I would no longer see him and i would have to find someone else that I could be as close to as I was to him. In Burlington, nothing was the same. This is exactly what Maya is being faced with. However, moving was not as bad as I thought. And this is almost what Maya is going through. Things are going well for her other than the fact that her brother is taking up time from things she wants to do to translate for their father. If I was Maya I would not do this and I would become angry at my brother. So in conclusion, I know exactly what Maya has to go through with the moving process, however, I would handle the conflict with her brother differently.

  6. If I were facing the same problems as Maya, I would do what she did. When her brother got suspended for getting in a fight in school and she had to translate for her dad, she switched up the words. I would do the same because making it seem like the fight wasn’t a serious deal would just make it easier and less stressful on her parents. Her parents work hard as immigrants and telling her dad that her brother got in a fight for being different would make them stress and contemplate if coming to America was the right choice. Also if she covered for her brother, she could ask for a favor in the future, like him trying to convince her parents to let her go to the Spring Fling. Overall, trying to go to the Spring Fling and dealing with her brother’s actions are difficult, but covering for him is something I would do and hopefully it would help me out in the future if I were Maya.

  7. If I were Maya and was going through the same problem as her with my brother, I would've told my dad exactly what happened. If I had lied or put it into other words I would've probably been caught sooner or later and it would have not been worth lying for. She could get in huge trouble for lying, especially because her parents are traditional from her old country.

  8. If I were Maya dealing with the same problems as her, I would probably feel really pressured. I would feel really pressured because she is like the bridge between her family and America. If she fails to tell her family something, then they have no idea what is going on. Also she is trying to live the American life just like all of the other boys and girls in her school. This is also really hard for her because her family is very old school and they do not really understand the American way of life. If I were Maya I would try to keep calm and do what I think is best for the family and herself, because at this point in her life, she has more knowledge of the current situation than the mother or the father. I would try and maybe stretch the truth to get what I know is right, like maybe telling the father that the spring fling is highly recommended by the principle. In conclusion, this is what I would do if I were in Maya’s position.

  9. If I was in Maya’s world facing her challenges, I don’t know how I would take it all in. But, I believe that I would pretty much go crazy. My parents are really strict, my little brother is being bullied, and I have a big job translating for my parents. Honestly, I think the translating part is pretty cool, not just with the speaking two languages, but the getting out of trouble if I wanted to. Anyway, the other stuff, I really wouldn’t want. I am the youngest of the family, so I don’t really know how to deal with younger-sibling problems. If my younger sibling was being bullied, I would punch the bully myself. And my parents are very lenient about me doing stuff... Well if it’s legal anyway. So, yeah. That’s how I would deal with the challenges that Maya is going through.

  10. Ethan Sharpe 5th period
I would be very scared to go to the principal's office because I'm a really good person. As Maya missed her club because of her brother I would be too if I had to not attend a club I wanted to really go to. I would tell her parents about her school and how it's different from the school she used to go to so she can get more involved in her school and the curriculum. If I was also her I would thank her aunt for helping the family getting into the country. Her dad shouldn't be so hard on her brother because he was the one getting bullied so that kid deserved the punch in the face. This is what I would do if I was Maya.

  12. Maya as a teenagers has been through a lot so far in her life. She has lost her grandmother who was the leader of the family. So they moved to the USA thanks to her aunt putting an add in a dating magazine, which benefits the family as there is a better life here. Even though its a better life here, she still has difficulties. She has to translate for her parents when talking to people speaking English, she has to miss out on some events for school due to how strict her parents are. I'll tell you straight up right now that I would not be able to deal with it if I was faced with the same dilemma. The life that I'm living if what you call a cake walk but it is not even remotely close to what Maya has gone through. I never lost an immediate family member like she has. To be honest I can't imagine how I would react if I lost my grandmother due to how close we are. I don't know how she is able to deal with her family saying no all of the time. I'm told no to a lot of things but not everything. This poor girl is denied of going to activities after to school because her parents have brought there beliefs from her old country to America. I give her a lot of credit for doing what she does and for keeping hope that her parents might say yes to her going to the Spring Fling. Maya is a strong, rare breed that are able to deal with hardships like the ones that she has faced.

  13. If I was faced with the same life challenges as Maya, I would probably act the same way she did. I would feel upset that I wouldn't be able to go to the Spring Fling. The only thing I wouldn't do was lie to my dad about my brother getting into fight. I do get why Maya lied, but in my opinin her brother could have handle the situation in a better way. Therefore, if I was faced with the same life challenges as Maya I would react almost the same way she did, I just wouldn't lie
