Period 5- Choices

Jonas comes to the conclusion that letting people choose their own clothes, spouses, and even jobs would be dangerous. In what ways would it be safer (and even better) to have society choose things for us? What bad things would be fixed by having society choose for us? Is it more dangerous if we’re allowed to make our own choices?

  1. In some ways, it would be better to have society choose things for us. For instance, it can make the citizens happy. If we aren't allowed to choose what e want to wear or what our occupation is going to be, then we will have unsatisfied citizens. As a result, citizens can rebel against the society rules. If society were to choose for us, we should have some guidelines to propose decisions. For example, citizens should vote on decisions being made so there would be no controversy. I think it would be more dangerous if we made our own choices because if we disagree with the choices being made it can cause violence. I think it's reasonable to have a government make decisions that is best for the people and for themselves. Therefore, I prefer a government to make choices for a society.

  2. Some ways that it would be safer for to have society choose for us is that it could prevent a lot of problems between citizens. Also if society chose for us they would probably be less likely to make mistakes, then us choosing for ourselves. I don't think this could be be better, but I see why it can be called safer. Some bad things that could be fixed (or could be prevented) if society chose for us is things like divorce, because is society picks everything for you then your spouse would be perfect for you. I think that allowing us to make make our own decisions would be more exciting, not dangerous.

  3. It is great to be able to choose for yourself most of the time, but what about when it is a hard decision or you want end up making the wrong choice? Sometimes it would be better to have someone choose certain things in your life. It may be easier and better for other people to pick out your job for you, like what they do in 'The Giver'. This way it can help because you wouldn't have to worry about job interviews, or the money and education needed because people will be keeping a close eye to see what your skills and qualities are. Then, there are a few things that I would not want people making decisions for. I would want to pick who my spouse is, my children, what I wear and what knowledge I can obtain about my surroundings and my history. If you take all those choices away from people then it takes away some of our freedom. Now and then we may make the wrong choice but we can learn from them and move on. It makes us stronger as individuals. If we are just given things them we will never learn.

  4. If society chose things for us, a lot of problems would be solved. No one would have to suffer heartbreak when things go wrong in a relationship. This would actually make our world a lot happier. Also, if everyone wore the same clothes there would be less problems. There would be a lot less bullying because someone doesn't fit in. I think that some things would be better if wdidn't choose, but a lot make us unique by what we choose. I like it better having freedm to makeour decisions.

  5. Jonas thinks that letting people make their own choice is a bad idea because it will be dangerous. If you let people make their own choice, then everyone will be unique. Our choices are what make us special. Also, when you make a choice that is wrong you learn how to correct those choice, and you become wiser. In Jonas' society everyone is the same because they can't chose who they want to be, they are told. Having people make their own choices benefits us because no one knows you better than yourself, and you know what you like. Having someone chose something for, there is a risk that you won't like and won't try as hard to accomplish a given task. There are risks to letting people chose for themselves. If a person does something wrong it doesn't affect just them, it affects anyone who was involved. Also, if someone has the power to make their own choices, they might break laws or get out of control. It is more dangerous to let us make our own choices, but if we don't then no mistakes will ever be made and no one will have wisdom. You grow from your mistakes because you have to fix them yourself. In conclusion if we had to let someone else make our own choices, we wouldn't accomplish as much and no one would grow mentally.

  6. There are many ways in which it would be safer and even better for society to choose things for us. One way in which it would be safer for society to choose things for us is what to wear during the winter. For example society could make us wear winter coats so we could be protected from the cold when the temperature is very low. One bad thing that could be fixed by having society choose for us is that society could make it so that everyone can have food for free so that no one would be hungry in this world. It could be more dangerous for people to make their own decisions because someone might be crazy and do bad things. That's how it could be safer for society to choose things for us and how it could be dangerous for people to make their own choices.

  7. This train of thought would benefit in some ways but not many. We would not know divorce because we couldn't choose wrongly. Also there would be no way to get made fun of because of clothes because you didn't pick them out. I, however, do not think that it is a bad or even dangerous thing that we make our own decisions. We are allowed to choose what we want to do with our life. Sometimes our first choices don't always work out but that forces us to try new things and expand our boundaries. We also learn from our mistakes and bad decisions.

  8. It would be safer for society to choose things for us because there wouldn't be that many mistakes. In the giver, the decisions they make were so precisely chosen that there be no fault or problem in the decision. If we make our own choices, there could be mistakes. For example, when we choose our spouses, we can either decide to stay with them, or get a divorce; they don't have that kind of problem in Jonas's society. Another example is that we could quit our jobs and find a new one; in the giver, there was one person for one job in a certain age group. Some bad things that would be fixed if society choose for us is that their decision would be so precise, we wouldn't have a reason to change the decision. It isn't that dangerous for us to make our own decisions because I'm sure people do things for a reason, and they must know why they chose something because they did. If w weren't able to make our own decisions and choices, then there wouldn't be any freedom for us.

  9. I think they are things that people could chose that would help the society, and other things wouldn't help the society. What to wear and what to eat isn't that important but things like choosing jobs and homes for people could help. If we had a group of people chose our jobs I think things in the society would be much better because they would earn the salary they need to support themselves and their families. It is more dangerous making our own decisions like disobeying our parents rules and other things that can get us into trouble.

  10. There are many different reasons why it would be better for society to chose things for us.One would be that there would be a smaller divorce rate. You would end up with the person that you are meant to be with. Not someone who you think you love but it turns out you don't. Another reason is sometimes people spend there life learning how to do something and it turns out they are no good at it or dislike it and want to do something else. That isn't good. It would be better if our job was picked for us and it was something that we would truely like to do. That would save us a lot of time and training. We can start doing what we want to do quicker. It would also be better if we all wore similar things. Even if it takes away our originality, it would be better. Some people spend way to much time on our hair and clothing. If we all wore the same thing, they would be able to devote that time elsewhere. In some ways it is dangerous to make oyr own choices. We may end up making the wrong ones. In order to learn though, we need to make mistakes. Without mistakes, there would be no wisdem. When people make mistakes, they know what not to do next time. They learn something new that is valuable for tlife. Therefore, it may be safer to let others make our choices, but we need to be able to learn from our mistakes and gain the wisdem we need for life.

  11. There are definitely consequences to being able to choose so many different things in out society. For example, our spouses. In our society, because we choose who we marry, sometimes things don't work out with the person we choose. We may stop loving them, we may begin to love someone else, or we may want to divorce them. In Jonas' society, all of these concerns are eliminated by the fact that the people do not make these decisions. Also, in our community we are basically able to choose the occupation we want. However, there are risks in doing this. For example, someone may not fully like their job, and they may just be doing it for the money. Some people in our society are like that, or they simply do not care about the importance of their job. In Jonas' society, this is eliminated by the fact that jobs are selected by the Council of Elders, after special observances. Very rarely is a wrong selection made. In our society, people are allowed to choose what they wear. Although I love this freedom, sometimes people are made fun of or excluded based on their clothing choice. Because of these reasons, it could possibly be better for our society to make these types of choices for us. In most cases, it would probably be safer for society to choose for us. However, we would know nothing of how to even make choices. We wouldn't know what it's like to make the wrong choice, and we wouldn't know how to fix our mistakes if we were ever to make the wrong choice. Even though having us make these decisions is much more dangerous than having society choose for us, it is ultimately better. Sometimes people know better than society, especially when coming to who you love. Society would pair you with someone you are compatible with, but the feeling of love is much stronger and much more lasting than that. Therefore, it is, in the end, better that we make all of our own choices rather than society.

  12. If you had your jobs, spouses, and clothes picked out for you then we would never need to choose for ourselves or have to worry as much. We would never get hurt by heartbreak, we don't have to worry about losing our jobs, and you would not need to worry that someone will judge you for what you are wearing because it is picked out for everyone. The downside to this is that it's almost like you're not your own person. It's like you're living but you're not really there. You exist but everything is set for you so there's nothing you can do. Life is meant to be dangerous and living and being your own person will always come with the risk of things changing and people hurting you. I think that it is not more dangerous to let us have choices and it's more important to have what makes us happy than any other goal.

  13. If a society chose things for us, there would be some benefits, however there would be some downsides as well. For the benefits, people wouldn't go around making bad choices that would affect people in a negative way. For example, there would be no crime because choices are made for everyone. Another example would be in choosing jobs. What if someone chooses a job they find out later that they really don't want, and they can't change it. If our community made decisions for everyone, then there would be no situations where people pick the wrong career. Finally, there wouldn't be anyone setting bad examples for children. For example, people who act all trashy in public choose to act that way. In a society that makes decisions for you, those people who choose to act trashy in public would act in an acceptable manner. In the long run, it is more dangerous if we are allowed to make our own choices, however, it is almost better when people make their own decisions because people should be able to express themselves and making decisions and even the wrong decisions can help you learn more and teach what to do so you don't make the wrong decision again.

  14. If a society could choose things for us, it would be better in certain ways. For instance, we wouldn’t be able to make wrong decisions. Also, we wouldn’t have the stress that usually comes with certain decision making processes. Some of the decisions the society makes for us could also possibly be better than the decision we would have made on the same topic. Sometimes, other people can notice things about us that we don’t notice, and depending on what the decision is, this information could be important to know. By having society choose for us, some bad things could even be fixed/avoided. For example, decisions made by citizens that could end up hurting themselves or even the society could be avoided by the society making those decisions. I don’t think it’s more dangerous if we’re allowed to make our own choices, I just think it’s more risky. If we make the wrong choice, there could be consequences, but that is how we learn. If we couldn’t make choices, we wouldn’t be wrong, and wouldn’t learn from the mistakes we made. Even if there is risk involved, I believe making choices is an important freedom that should never be taken away.

  15. To have a society choose your jobs, clothes and spouses is better for many reasons. First off because then there will be no judging of people because it is not like they chose their job, spouse, or clothes especially. By having the society choose for us we could fix bad things such as the struggle to find and get a job. I honestly think it would be more dangerous if we were allowed to make our oown choices because than what if you are nor good at what you chose. That would not affect only you but everyone.

  16. I think it would be safer if we choose what our professions ended up being. I think this because lots of people make wrong choices about what they do to support themselves, and often need to find new work. I could say the same for marriages, but there ARE marriages that do work out in the end, and letting society choose a spouse for someone takes away what we call "true love." Clothing is another thing that might be safer if we let society choose. Lots of children get teased over what they wear, which can even lead to suicide in some cases. If everyone wore the same thing, there would be no way to insult someone about the clothes they wear, because the teaser would be wearing the exact same thing. So unemployment, divorce, and sometimes suicide could be fixed if we let society choose some of these things for us.

I don't believe, though, that it is more dangerous to make our own choices, because then we would be reaped of our personalities, pretty much. We wouldn't be able to marry who we wanted to or wear what we like, which is part of who you are. Without that, we're not the same.

  17. The reason that this country/our society, in my opinion, is still standing is because it's ruled by the people an in the best interest for the people. Our country lets us keep our basic freedoms and it continues to keep the country in order. Now where people take advantage of those same freedoms that's where an issue is put in to place. I think I they were to create a society where they seem fit to make all the choices before someone is even born for that person seems unfair and rediculous. People should be able to make there own choices of their jobs, their clothes, and this sounds even rediculous to talk about but their spouses if nothing else! The society running on human individuality is a free one the way it should be but I don't entirely agree with that either. Freedoms are dangerous. They are dangerous to other citizens, they threaten the society's government, and they can be abused as easily as given. Maybe it's organized and easier to have the government choose for us, but that doesn't mean it's the right thing to do. Everyone shoul have a voice literally, mentally, and physically. You can't keep humans the way I see it, trapped in this so called utopian society.
