Period 1- Choices

Jonas comes to the conclusion that letting people choose their own clothes, spouses, and even jobs would be dangerous. In what ways would it be safer (and even better) to have society choose things for us? What bad things would be fixed by having society choose for us? Is it more dangerous if we’re allowed to make our own choices?

  1. Letting people make their own decisions would be more dangerous, but the danger is so low that it doesnt really matter. It would be better because they pick a job that would be best for them, and the committee of elders is usually never wrong. This would also be bad, because people need to choose what they want to do. They might want to try something new, but society wont allow them to dos so. Our own choices is dangerous, but also can lead to great things.

  2. I slightly agree with Jonas that having to make our own choices would be dangerous. If a society chose for us they don't make much mistakes like us and people won't make fun of each other for making the wrong decision. If a society chose for us little kids will make less mistakes and grow up to have good lives. Its a little more dangerous if we make our own choices because we may do something we regret and end up possibly hurting someone else.

  3. There are quite a few things that would be safer if these decisions are made for us. The reason for bad unsafe things happening is because people made the wrong decisions It would be safer because most of the time people do bad things like stealing because they don't have a good job and they can't pay for the stuff they need. If the decision of your job is made for you, you won't be able to make the wrong decision and end up doing things like stealing or committing crimes. The clothes being decided for them would make a kid or teenagers life safer. There is a lot of bullying and most of it is due to being different and wearing different clothing. If everyones clothing is chosen for them and it is all the same it will be impossible to be made fun of. Without bullying it would be a much safer environment for children and even some adults. Like I said before some bad things that would be fixed are some crime and bullying. Even without choosing your own spouse will fix the common divorce. If people don't know any better than having their spouse chosen for them they will learn to get along because they have to be together. It will bring down the divorce rate because the people will not even know of divorce if is chosen for us. No I think it would actually make it less dangerous because the less people have the chance to make a wrong decision the less likely they are to mess up and do bad things. There is one downside, and that is that people could realize that they are being controlled and they might try to change things and it would be even worse.

  4. If our society chose things for us, it might be safer. Sometimes, when given choices, people can make the wrong ones. If we weren't given choices, maybe there wouldn't be as many bad things happening to the world. When given choices, sometimes the bad choice can seem better at the time, then in the end, you realize it wasn't a good choice. When you are given a choice, however, responsibility comes into play. If you can't handle it, then there shouldn't be choices. Sometimes it would seem easier if all decisions were made for us. On the other hand, if everyone was doing the same thing because their choices were made for them, mostly everyone would be the same. People would wear the same things, look the same, there would be no differences. It would all be plain and quite boring actually. If society chose how we should handle bad situations, maybe there would be less crime. At the same time, if society chose how we lived our lives, nothing would be different. It'd be plain, boring, dull. Making our own choices give us the opportunity to be responsible, and we all need to learn to have some responsibility. So in the end, choices are good. We learn from our mistakes and that's how life goes.

  5. I think in some ways society choosing things for us can benefit us and is more safe. I think that society should chose what we eat. I think this way because they would pick healthy meals for us and we wouldn't always eat junk. We would also all be in the same weight group so no one would get made fun of their weight. I think society should also pick out what our punishments are for our actions that lead to bad things. If our parents won't show us what's wrong and what isn't then society should!
Society choosing for the people would fix the problems of arguing over things, bulling, difference, etc. I think that it depends on the person that's making the decision for the choices to be dangerous. As you can see, society choosing things for you can be good and bad.

  6. In the novel The Giver, Jonas the main character comes to the conclusion that letting people choose their own clothes, spouse, and even jobs would be dangerous. In a few ways it actually would be better if society would choose thing for us. Everything would be easier if they choose things for us. For example if someone were to choose the wrong clothing to wear they might get too cold and get hypothermia or if its too hot they might hyperventilate. In some cases it also might be safer to be given spouses because most marriages nowadays end in divorce and then they have to arrange how much money each of them get and all the property and how they´ll share the children they may have. Also in some trageic cases your spouse might not be the person you thought they were and might kill you or abuse of you.Choosing your own job might be dangerous in a way because you can choose the wrong career that doesn´t fit you and then you might have to start all over and choose a different career. Bad things would also be fixed by having society choose for us such as their would be no poverty, hunger and maybe not even pain. I think that there is good and bad for everything and i think that there is both advantages and disadvantages so in conclusion I do think its dangerous if we´re allowed to make our own choices but at the same time i believe that it is important that we run risks and that we make mistakes in order to learn from them.

  7. It would be safer for many reasons. By them, picking our jobs, no one will be unemployed or have to worry about people trying to steal their job. Picking their clothes would be safe because no one would be wearing clothes that are richer than another person. Picking our spouses would be safer because no one would end up alone and no one would get divorced. In conclusion, it would be safer.

There are things that would be fixed if society chose for us. We wouldn't have to worry about job opportunities and job interviews. We would never have to worry about the price of clothing because it is given to us and we wouldn't have to worry about "fitting in." We wouldn't have to date anyone or go through the entire process of breaking up and dating again and mingling, the society would just select a spouse for us. We also wouldn't have to worry about never finding the person for us. Therefore, bad things would be fixed if the society chose for us.

I believe it is not more dangerous if we're allowed to make our own choices. I believe in free will and that we deserve is, so someone taking away my free will upsets me. I would probably be very angry with the society if they chose my spouse and clothing. I would be alright with them choosing my job because they will select one especially for me, but I would still probably be infuriated. Thus, I don't believe it is more dangerous for us to make our own decisions.

  8. I would hate for people to take over our lives and choice what is best for us. If they did then we would not be happy at all. We would be wearing outfits we don't like, we will be married to people we barely know at all, and doing jobs we don't like and are not meant for our skills. Maybe there is a possible chance that doesn't all apply to someone but I wouldn't be wearing clothes I don't like, nor would I marry some girl I don't know, nor would I be working in a stupid job that I don't like and horrible at.

  9. If society chose everything for people there would be no bullying or alienation so that would be a good thing but at the same time so many differences are celebrated like cultures, music, etc. If everything was chosen the world would be safer because there would be no debates about anything. Differences cause debate. Debates can turn into arguments that lead on to dangerous things. Although differences can cause some uprising I think people are better off with differences because it gives individuality. Its safer if choices are not chosen but not nessacarily better for the community.

  10. I believe that it would be safer to have society choose things for us because they would keep us from making bad decisions that we would regret. They would fix the problem of people being lonely. In Jonas's society, people apply for a spouse instead of having to look for a spouse on their own. Its a little dangerous letting us make our own choices because a lot of times people don't do the right thing. If they chose for us, they would always make the right decisions

  11. Letting people choose their own things, jobs, etc has it's benefits and drawbacks. It would be safer to have everything chosen for us because everything would be in order. There would be no complications. People do what they are told, and it gets done. Getting everything chosen also has a few negative factors. We wouldn't get the freedoms and joys of choosing and piecing out or lives. We can't get the choice to make our life's different, it's all chosen for us. It is more dangerous to make our own choices, there is always the possibility of failure. Choosing ourselves can lead to a lifetime of regret, but there's the chance of success.

  12. There are some benefits and disadvantages to allowing society choose things for us. Like the amount of "unhealthy" food that you could have, would be a benefit. If people had a chosen amount of healthy food, people would be healthier and there would be less health issues. The disadvantage to this happening would be that there wouldn't be "fun" in what you eat. Another way we could benefit from society choosing things for us, is by choosing our friends. If the society were to choose our friends, it would be easier to make them, as it is hard for some people to make friends. This is also a disadvantage because if a friend was chosen for you, it wouldn't necassarily be you picking, meaning that you wouldn't be exactly friends because they will have different favorite things to do, a different personality, etc. Something bad that a society could do is pick jobs. If someone gets a job they don't like, they will most likely not try as hard as someone that enjoys it. This would lower the quality of whatever work they are trying to complete. In conclusion, if a society chooses things for people, the world won't run as smooth as it does now.

  13. Jonas comes to the conclusion that making your own choices is dangerous. Alot of danger would be taken away if society chose for us. No hatred would happen nor bullying. People would all look the same so they would not standout. Lots of crime would end. If we got to make our own choice like we do it is more dangerous. We can make wrong choices and things could go wrong. Therfore society making choices for us would be safer for us and everyone around us.

  14. I believe it would be safer for society to make choices for us because it would prevent us from making a wrong decision. For instance, someone could be faced with the decision of getting involved in some type of crime. If society had a way of controlling our decisions, they would make the smart choice of shutting down the choice of crime. If society made of decisions, the world would be cleaner, safer, and kinder. If we made our own decisions the world would contain high amounts of crime in an area. There would be more amounts of drugs all around. If people made their own decisions, it would be dangerous because most people tend to pick the wrong choice.

  15. Well then if we had choices made for us, then people will/could learn discipline. Maybe it would work well, but for others maybe not so much. There would be some bad things as well. I think that one major problem would be that people wouldn't want to listen to the rules and would end up trebling toward the government. Others might obey the rules, but get to the point where they don't want to have some stuff chosen for them. For example: Spouses. That would most likely cause a major stirring in the community. On the other hand, I do think that at some time, that it is dangerous for some to make their own decision. For example: Choosing their own job. If someone chose a job that they thought they might like, but they're not really good at it, can cause pose some major threats to co-workers, depending on the type of job you're working.

  16. In some ways, it would be safer to have society choose things for me because we wouldn't have half of the complications/problems that we face today. Such as hunger, where you live, what you do for a living, war, and everyday problems, which would be easier for the world. Some disadvantages are that people don't get the choose what they want( don't get to have there own opinion). I don't believe that it is more dangerous if we're allowed to make our own choices because even though we face problems they aren't as bad. In the First Amendment states that we have the right of freedom of speech, assemble, petition, religion, and of press which allows us to choose what we want. Therefore, I believe that it isn't dangerous if we're allowed to make our own choices.

  17. To have society choose things for us, we would be able to look past our own selfish desires and would be chosen to do what would most benefit our society, rather than ourselves as individuals. We would be able to stop people from making bad decisions due to their own personal greed or desire. While it may be more dangerous for us to make our own choices, I think all people are born with the right to make our own choices. They pave our lives with experiences, good and bad.

  18. No because a society that makes our choices means that we have no freedom to make our own choices. A freedom to do whatever we want is being violated by society making the choice. It would not be better for the scoiety to make the choices. The bad things that would be fixed are the idea of the people choosing the wrong choices. If the society made the choice, then the idea of the bad choice is not as commom as when humans make their own choices It would be a little dangerous to make our own choices but I think it would be the right thing. The freedom to make our own choices should be given to us and should be expressed there.

  19. Jonas comes to the conclusion that letting people make their own decisions is dangerous. I disagree with him. I think that in Jonas's society, they are so used to having most things decided for them. The idea of having all the responsibility seems frightening to Jonas, and therefore he decides it must be dangerous. I do agree that some things should be restricted, and chosen for us, rules that are only in order to keep us safe. Overall, I think freedom of expression is extremely important to have, and it isn't dangerous. Sure some people might be judged or made fun of by the way they express themselves, but again thats a part of life that they have to learn to handle, and make decisions on. Its better to feel all kinds of emotion, then none at all. Therefore i don't think making our own decisions is dangerous. Jonas and the Giver fear the unknown - which seems more dangerous then it actually is.
