Period 2- Advice

Think about the characters in Flowers for Algernon and their interactions with Charlie. What advice would you give to one or more of the characters regarding some of the issues they have faced throughout the story? This advice can be given to Charlie or any of the other characters in the story. Explain the reasons for the advice you have chosen to give them.

  1. I would tell Charlie to continue his research until he can not continue. This is because he likes to do the research and also he knows that the only way anyone will ever know what went wrong in the experiment is from Charlie. He must keep up his journal entries. Also, I would tell Dr. Strauss and Nemur to look into finding some possible ways to prevent Charlie's deterioration of intelligance as well as other effects the experiment might have on him. If they can keep Charlie's intelligance levels up, they can get more info from him later on.

  2. If i could give advice to anyone in the story. It would defiantly be Charlie. I would tell Charlie to relax. He is very upset that his intelligence is decreasing and he needs to relax. I think he should try to read books at his level so that he can at least hold on to some of his knowledge. I would also tell Charlie that it's okay to not be the smartest person in the world. Charlie has experience being very smart and being very "dumb". Hopefully he can remember what it's like to be on both ends and can remember to not be used and made fun of.

  3. In the story “Flowers For Algernon” I think that the best person to give advice would be Charlie. He has had a very tough life so far. He was considered “retarted”. Then he was used for and experiment to make him smarter and be able to learn things and gain knowledge better. That worked like a charm and it made him smarter than any of the scientist that created the experiment to make Charlie smarter than ever. He was so smart he had to lower his vocabulary so other people could understand what he meant. A few months later Charlie began to have signs of “losing his intelligence”. He noticed that certain things he had said no longer made sense to him and that he had a hard time using higher level vocabulary and he no longer could understand foreign languages.
This makes Charlie the perfect person to give advice. The advice I would give him would be you were given the gift of being smart for a few months and you had proven this operation to be a success. You have helped the science community more than will ever be expressed in this lifetime. You helped open the rode to many more advanced and technological things. Even as we stand today there is nothing currently saying that you will lose everything gained. You could just lose some or maybe the other doctors or yourself could come up with a way for you to regain what you learned or make it so you don’t have to lose everything you have learned. I hope as we go on everything turns out for the better for you!

  4. I would give some advice to the dish washer at the diner. I would tell him that everything will eventually turn out okay. Also, that he shouldn't listen to any of those people who were laughing. He might be capable of great things and he should always try hard and be proud of what he does. A dish washer might be a small job, but it's important. I would also point out that the man that stuck up for him was Charlie and he used to be just like him. I would say that he is so smart now because he worked hard, just like the boy is. Also, if he sets his mind to something, he can succeed.

  5. If I could give advice to anyone in the story, I would give it to Charlie's friend Joe. I would tell Joe that making fun of Charlie makes him look very bad to everyone who sees it. Also, I would give Charlie the advice that never give up on something you are determined to do. In this case, it is his research with the "Algernon-Gordon effect". If he wants to be successful, then he needs to make sure he never gives up, to make sure he can stay smart for the longest possible time, or even forever.

  6. I would give advice to Charlie before he became smart. i would tell him that things will get better. i would also tell him that because of the operation is making him smarter by the minute. i would give him this advise because it is true and it would make him feel better about himself. that is the advice i would give to charlie.

  7. There are many characters faced with challenges in the story but the biggest problem is faced by Charlie. I would give advise to him because he is going through a hard time losing something that he has just recently acquired. I think that the best advise I would give charlie is that what he has done was for the good of not just science but the world. I would say that he also has left an impact on science even though he may be losing his intelligence. Also I think I would give advise to Mr. Nemur. I think that he deserves advise because his results were not as successful as he would have liked. Although his experiment may not have come to the conclusion he wanted I think he can move forward with his research knowing that he is on the right path. Lastly I would give advise to all of Charlie's former friends. I think they need the advise on how they treat people in contrast to how they treated Charlie. They shouldn't treat people wrongly just because they are different from you. There is no reason to reject or laugh at anyone because they are higher or of lower intelligence. These are the people I would give advise to and why.

  8. I would give Charlie advice. I would tell him that you should accept what and who you are because what Charlie did has now gotten him into a pretty bad situation. He didn't like the way he was so he got an operation done to make him more smarter. The same had been done to Algernon and he recently died, so Charlie is realizing the same could happen to him and he is also decreasing in intelligence. I would give this advice to Charlie because then this wouldn't have happened in the first place.

  9. The advice that I would give to Charlie is that instead of sulking around in his house he should go meet his friends. I would give him this advice because it will help him face his changings better. If he stays home he will continue to have thoughts of suicide and be depressed. He shouldn't have to face the failing of the experiment all by himself. He should get support from the two scientists and Ms. Kinnian. Having friends around might help Charlie get through this process as smoothly as possible.

  10. An advice that I would give Charlie is to stop with the research and also to stop being depressed and disappointed at himself. I will give him that advice because if he becomes smarter again, he would be the one get hurt again. When he was smart he can't communicate to others because he was too smart that no one knows what he was talking about. On the other hand, before the operation of becoming smart, he at least thought he had many friends and he can communicate and talk to people. Since the operation ended up having a negative result he mind as well go along with who he really was and his real self.

  11. There are many characters during this story that could use some help. However I'm going to have to stick to Charlie on this one. The issues that he is going through are a lot for one to bear. The advice that I would give to Charlie is that he should just hold on. He should try to remember the good things that happened to him when he wasn't so smart. He connected with Miss Kinnian better and still had his job. He should remember the moral values he learned when he was smart. The most important thing I think he should do is to live life to the fullest while he still can since he might die.

  12. I would give Dr.Nemur advice about how he shouldn't get down on himself about how Charlie and Dr.Strause think of him at the end of the story. I thought that if it weren't for Dr.Nemur that Charlie would have never got the opportunity to have the operation in the first place. Dr.Nemur was not riding on Dr.Strause for fame.

  13. I have advice for Dr. Nemur and Dr.Strauss. My advice would be to be patient during an experiment. Why I say this is because if they were a bit more patient and extended the time period the time period in which they were testing Algernon maybe they would know that Algernon would decrease in his learning experience eventually so they didn't have to put Charlie through this tough time. And who knows they could even wipe out all of Charlie' memories. That is some advice I had for Dr. Nemur and Dr. Strauss

  14. I would advise Charlie to be careful. All the sudden, he is smarter than everyone he knows, and these people are becoming scared of him. He needs to be careful with his words and actions to make sure he does not sound conceited or odd. I would also warn Charlie to be cautious with his testing. He is now doing testing on his own, which allows him to constantly work on it. He saw what happened to Algernon, and he needs to be careful to not overwork himself to where he feels depressed or suicidal. I encourage Charlie to continue to work on the testing, but not like an obsessed person. I think it is important for Charlie to carry on with the testing, because maybe he could find why Algernon lost his knowledge and died, which could help him. Lastly, I would advise Charlie to live life right now. He doesn't know what will happen to him tomorrow, because even a genius can’t predict the future.

  15. After Charlie found out that his "friends" from work weren't really his friends, I would give him the advice of it is better to be a good person with a few friends than a bad person with lots of friends. Charlie was a sweet, caring man that had only a few real friends but the people from where he worked that laughed at him and make fun of him were mean people that laughed at others but had lots of friends. Charlie needs to realize that his personality should matter more than how many friends he has or who his friends are.

  16. I would give advice to Charlie. I would tell him to keep doing what he is doing. He is deteriorating now, and only he can tell others how he is feeling and what is going on. This is hard for him, but he needs to keep going to see if through him, different people can see a way to make increased intelligence permanent. Honestly, I don't see any way for him to get back to the level of intelligence that he was on, but there may be other works like this where other people can improve on this and make advances that are beneficial to mankind.

  17. I would give advice to Charlie. I would tell him that he should not give up on himself yet. He saw what happened to Algernon but that does not mean he will suffer the same fate. He did the tests himself but he should not be doubtful about his future. Science is sometimes wrong.

  18. There is some advice I would give to Charlie. I would advise Charlie to just try and stay positive. He is beggining to realize of some of the affects his surgery will have on him and he is losing his hope. I would just tell him to try and enjoy everything while he can and to just try to keep your chin up and stay as positive as you can. That is the advice I would give Charlie.

  20. I would give advice to Charlie because I have faced many problems, like him. It does not matter if your smart or dumb, what matters most is the people around you. In the beginning of the story Charlie just wanted to become smarter, but he had the people around him too help. Now he is too smart just to talk to people. He has to talk like he is "dumb".Charlie did not judge any one before he became smart. I liked him the way he was before, and not now.

  21. My advice to the girls that made fun of Charlie when he was cleaning is that what if you were considered "retarded." They would not like it at all. Charlie doesn't want to be considered retarded but that is just the way life is for Charlie. He has a mental disorder where it takes him a lot longer to learn. Charlie is spelling words wrong that a third grader would spell right. My next advice is to Charlies "friends" when he got invited to a party. Charlie before his surgery would've never known his friends were making fun of him. He just assumed that they thought he was funny and they loved to be around him. After his surgery which none of his friends or other people that are not involved with the experiment know about realized that his friends were not his friends. They used Charlie for amusement and now he is smart enough to realize that. Before his surgery he had no clue they didn't like him. Now he realizes it. So my advice to the people making an amusement out of Charlie is to say sorry to Charlie and never make fun of a challenged kid again.

  22. If I could, I would tell Charlie that whatever happens, he was once smarter than most people and that as an experiment, he has changed the way scientists will work and what projects will happen in the future. I think Charlie is worried that he may be not be as knowledgeable as he was before the experiment, or he may even be worried about death. I'd tell him that everyone is afraid of dying, but it's a part of life, and to enjoy what he has left. I think it's important he knows these two pieces of advice because they may help him feel better knowing that if he passes soon, or even when he passes in however long that is, he has contributed a great deal of scientific evidence on the subject of increasing intelligence in "mentally retarded" people, and he will not be long forgotten because for many years scientists will hear of his name when working in the field.

  23. If I were to give advice to any characters in the story, it would be to Frank and Joe. Charlie, who hadn't known better at the time, thought that those two were his friends. When he was smart, Charlie figured out that they were laughing at him not with him. I would give Frank and Joe the advice to look on the inside of someone who looks up to you and see their personality rather than their intelligence. Charlie wasn't smart enough to understand why people would laugh but once he understood, he was mad. It's not worth losing a friend like Charlie, so don't give him a reason to get mad at you in the first place.
